Other nice things that came out of the Vulkan driver being supported on Mac is that we provide HDR support now on Mac for the Vulkan driver.Īnyway, onto the point. Perhaps it hits more optimal codepaths in the MoltenVK implementation because the Vulkan video driver is more well optimized than the Metal one. The current Vulkan MoltenVK implementation in RetroArch Mac is actually quite a bit faster than the native Metal video driver right now. This allows us to just set the default video driver to Vulkan, which should guarantee a high level of performance and also compatibility with cores that provide a Vulkan hardware context. In doing so, we could reasonably assume that the Macs capable of running this OS should have at least a GPU with support for the Metal 2 graphics API. This meant that we could go with our Metal/GL universal build that targets macOS High Sierra (10.13). Steam on macOS requires you to have at least macOS El Capitan (10.11) installed or later. It might be introduced at a later undisclosed date. This build is not provided by our buildbot right now as our buildbot infrastructure lacks the development tools to build it. This is a PowerPC version targeting macOS/OSX 10.5. Well, technically, there is a third version. It does not provide Vulkan or Metal driver support because of the minimum OS requirement. It provides OpenGL (3.2 core context) support (because Lion was the first macOS version to support OpenGL 3.2 and higher). This is a more pared-back, stripped-down version. Second version is the Lion (10.7 and later) version. This build has OpenGL, Metal and Vulkan/MoltenVK drivers, it has slang shader spec support, and is generally considered the most full-featured build. We also call this the Metal/GL universal build. Main version is the High Sierra build (10.13 and later). We provide two macOS versions right now (because we are as ever all about being backwards compatible): ![]() ![]() The Steam Mac version was a good opportunity for us to establish some minimum baseline system requirements to make sure that RetroArch on Mac would run well out of the box. That being the case, recently we believe that in order to improve the out of the box enduser experience, it is perhaps necessary to start making some general baseline assumptions on what endusers realistically are using in terms of hardware. The degree to which we push this is quite irregular in the modern day software industry but we believe it differentiates us from the rest of the pack, and in a good way. It’s one of our definite pet peeves and something we’re quite proud of. RetroArch pushes the concept of backwards compatibility to an absolute extreme. It’s basically like a development diary where we discuss future plans for upcoming versions and what we have been thinking about doing. Expect irregular blog posts like this, whenever something is on our mind that we want to share. The other resizing part already took this into account, but WM_GETMINMAXINFO did not.Ī new concept we’re going to try, we’ll see if it lasts. ![]()

Still somewhat shell-shocked by overnight fame, Beals went on to star next in Franc Roddam's Frankenstein re-working, "The Bride" (1985) opposite Sting. Fans were angry and disappointed, but the film made boatloads of cash for Paramount and that was all that mattered. Upon closer inspection, fans noticed that a variety of ways were used to disguise Jahan from Beals - including strobe flashing, Kabuki white face paint, dark shadows and a bucket of water. Indeed, French actress Marine Jahan had doubled for many of the dance sequences in the film - even a young male break-dancer in a wig had performed the last back spin during the famed audition scene. Controversy hit soon after the film's release, however, when it was revealed that Beals had not performed her own dance sequences in the film. She continued to audition for film roles while in college - and it was during a trip through Europe that she was first asked to go to New York to audition for this odd musical film directed by someone named Adrian Lyne, which sounded more like an extended MTV video than anything else.Landing the lead role of Alex Owens, a welder who moonlights as an exotic dancer at night, Beals was catapulted instantly into stardom with the unbelievable success of "Flashdance." Though reviews for the film were mixed, it made Beals not only a pop culture icon, but a fashion trendsetter, as well - with her character's off-the-shoulder chopped sweatshirts becoming the "It" style of the early 1980s. Remaining focused on her studies, Beals enrolled at the prestigious Yale University where she studied English. At the age of 17, she caught the eye of producers on the film "My Bodyguard" (1980), who cast her in a small part though it marked Beals' film debut, her role went uncredited. ![]() Pushing forward, Beals began to model and pursue film work as a teenager. Suffering a tragedy at a young age, Beal's father passed away when she was only 10. But Hageman could see what was happening. Like the two men at the Squirrel, he is quick to tell stories of past winters, including a tale about a group of old men trying to drive across the ice in a Lincoln Continental. Hageman, 63, also worked for years as an ice fishing guide on the island. It would be hard to figure it was anything else, said John Hageman, who for years managed the Ohio State University Stone Lab, a research facility on South Bass Island. ![]() Still, Stoiber acknowledged a grim possibility: “Maybe it’s climate change.” Sitting at the Squirrel and trading tales of past winters with Schroeder, he said there had always been bad ice years among the good ones. “Maybe it’s the usual cycle,” George Stoiber, 81, said of the last few disappointing winters. Still, among the longtime ice fishermen, hope dies hard. “It don’t freeze like it used to,” Parker said. Some of them had not even been ice fishing. The new year-rounders would not have any memory of winters when the ice was 2 feet thick. Parker and her fellow diners remarked that more younger people seemed to be staying on the island through the offseason. The yacht club, which was once closed all winter, hosted the soup dinner where Parker was communing with friends. Darts night is now twice weekly at Topsy’s. ![]() There is volleyball on Mondays and pickleball and yoga three days a week. They hardly see one another in the tourist season, when they work around the clock, trying to make enough money in one half of the year to get them through the other half.įor many longtime islanders, the season still revolves around the ice, but there are more things to do in the winter these days. The shutting down of most bars and restaurants in fall has always marked the start of the social season for those who live on the island. “The older islanders, they remember when you could drive all the way from here to Toledo,” said Aaron Schroeder, a carpenter and ice fishing guide known to his fellow year-rounders as Vern.īut it has been years since the ice was that kind of thick. In the old days, the ice usually got so solid that people in Put-in-Bay could drive the 5 or so miles to the mainland in a truck, and often they did. Ice coverage of Lake Erie this year has hit record lows. But the temperature always crept back up. The ice teased here and there in December and January, little shelves appearing in the harbors during short-lived frigid spells. “The men are going crazy,” said Linda Parker, who was at a community soup dinner with friends at the local yacht club. “We’re all cooped up,” said Dustin Shaffer, the pilot who flew me over, who later that night was drinking with other year-rounders at Topsy Turvey’s, the one bar that stays open all year. And without ice fishing, islanders repeatedly told me, there is not much point. Starting on my eight-minute flight from Port Clinton, Ohio, in a six-seater aircraft - in winter, the only way to get to the island - there was one question I was asked most often: Why are you here now? Without ice, there is no ice fishing. The Black Squirrel, one of the few inns open year round, would be packed with ice fishermen eating an early breakfast in the dining room, then taking their four-wheelers out for a long, cold day of catching walleye.īut while the fishermen showed up this year, the ice didn’t. Typically in late February, everyone would be out on the ice. “Your dad would be the second generation,” she said. It always has been, said Mary Ann McCann, 87, who was sitting at her dining room table with her granddaughter, counting the number of generations of her family that lived on South Bass. For most who live on the island year round and put up with the tourist season as an economic necessity, ice fishing makes it all worth it. The groups of ice fishermen who fly in to South Bass Island, where Put-in-Bay sits, bring a nice jolt of offseason cash, but that is just a side benefit. There are bonfires and cookouts, banquets and impromptu parties people sail ice boats, go ice skating and drive snowmobiles across the ice to visit friends on neighboring islands. When it begins, usually at some point in January or February, dozens of ice shanties sprout on the glorious pavement of a frozen Lake Erie.
